Conclusions: Do we eat them or watch them, or both? Challenges for conservation of sharks in Mexico and the NEP

Mexico is a country that makes heavy use of the population of sharks that inhabit the southern part of the Northeast Pacific Ocean (NEP). Shark meat has become an important food source in this country, while shark fins are used to supply the traditional Asian markets.

In addition to consumptive utilization, charismatic shark species supports ecotourism industry that has gained significance in several tourist resorts throughout the country. In this concluding chapter, we recap the contents of chapters included in volumes 83 and 85 in Advances in Marine Biology series. The chapters in this volume discuss biodiversity, conservation genetics, trophic ecology, migration movements, fisheries and shark ecotourism, allowing us to understand the current state of knowledge relevant to humans: the interaction of sharks in the Mexican Pacific.

We discuss the challenges for the sustainable use and conservation of sharks in the southern NEP and highlights the need for a more holistic management approach that includes economic factors and social. To meet this challenge, we recommend updating the National Plan of Action Sharks Mexico published in 2004, so it may continue to serve as a roadmap for the conservation and management of sharks in the NEP south for years to come.


Shorebirds (part of the order Charadriiformes) has a global distribution and show remarkable variation in ecological traits and behaviors associated with many core questions in the field of evolutionary ecology and conservation biology. Shorebirds are also relatively easy to study in the wild because they spawn and often occupy open habitats obedient to monitor.

Here we present a database documenting the reproductive ecology of 1647 marked individually snowy plovers (Charadrius nivosus) monitored between 2006 and 2016 in Bahía de Ceuta (23 ° 54n, 106 ° 57W) – an important breeding site in north-western Mexico. the database includes a variety of morphological, behavioral, and traits related to fitness of males and females together with spatial and temporal population dynamics. open this resource will serve as a repository of critical data to address an overarching question in bird ecology and conservation of wetlands during the era of big data and global collaborative science.

Rediscovery and phylogenetic relationships of Mimops scolopendromorph centipede orientalis Kraepelin, 1903 (centipede): from Mimopidae monotypic species endemic to China, for more than a century

Mimops orientalis Kraepelin, 1903 is a monotypic species of endemic Mimopidae China. This species is only known from a single specimen, holotype. Little is known about the biology, habitat association, or phylogenetic relationships.

It was rediscovered in the Qinling mountains in Shaanxi and Henan province, China, 117 years after his last record. Detailed descriptions and color photographs of live specimens provided along with ecology, conservation records updated, and data on sexual dimorphism. A genetic analysis (COI, 16S, and 28S rRNA) was conducted to assess the phylogenetic relationships between Mimopidae, Cryptopidae, Scolopendridae, Scolopocryptopidae, and Plutoniumidae. The results support Mimopidae classify as a valid family.

In Africa, the bat-borne zoonotic emerged in recent decades that resulted in large outbreaks or spillovers only sporadically. In addition, hundreds more viruses are described with no information zoonotic potential. We discuss the important characteristics of bats include bat biology, evolution, distribution and ecology which not only makes them unique among most mammals but also contribute to their potential as reservoirs of the virus. Detection of the virus in bats does not mean spillover that will occur and some biological, ecological and anthropogenic role in such an event.
